![]() Two years later, Morris's father sent him to Philadelphia, then the most populous city in British North America, where Morris lived under the care of his father's friend, Charles Greenway. In 1747, Morris immigrated to Oxford, Maryland, where his father had prospered in the tobacco trade. Until he reached the age of thirteen, Morris was raised by his maternal grandmother in England. His parents were Robert Morris Sr., an agent for a shipping firm, and Elizabeth Murphet biographer Charles Rappleye concludes that Morris was probably born out of wedlock. Morris was born in Liverpool, England, on January 20, 1734. After being released from prison, he lived a quiet, private life in a modest home in Philadelphia until his death in 1806. Unable to pay his creditors, he was confined in the Prune Street debtors' apartment adjacent to Walnut Street Prison from 1798 to 1801. During and after his service in the Senate, Morris went deeply into debt through speculating on land, leading into the Panic of 1796–1797. In the Senate, Morris supported Hamilton's economic program and aligned with the Federalist Party. Morris declined Washington's offer to serve as the nation's first Treasury Secretary, instead suggesting Alexander Hamilton for the position. The Pennsylvania legislature subsequently elected Morris as one of its two inaugural representatives in the United States Senate. Morris and his allies helped ensure that Pennsylvania ratified the new constitution, and the document was ratified by the requisite number of states by the end of 1788. ![]() Morris rarely spoke during the convention, but the constitution produced by the convention reflected many of his ideas. In 1787, Morris was selected as a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention, which wrote and proposed a new constitution for the United States. Morris was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1786. Morris believed that the national government would be unable to achieve financial stability without the power to levy taxes and tariffs, but he was unable to convince all thirteen states to agree to an amendment to the Articles of Confederation.įrustrated by the weakness of the national government, Morris resigned as Superintendent of Finance in 1784. Morris also reformed government contracting and established the Bank of North America, the first congressionally chartered national bank to operate in the United States. He helped provide supplies to the Continental Army under General George Washington, enabling, with the help of frequent collaborator Haym Salomon, Washington's decisive victory in the Battle of Yorktown. Morris accepted appointment as Superintendent of Finance and also served as Agent of Marine, from which he controlled the Continental Navy. Out of office, Morris refocused on his merchant career and won election to the Pennsylvania Assembly, where he became a leader of the "Republican" faction that sought alterations to the Pennsylvania Constitution.įacing a difficult financial situation in the ongoing Revolutionary War, in 1781 Congress established the position of Superintendent of Finance to oversee financial matters. Morris was a leading member of Congress until he resigned in 1778. As a member of Congress, he served on the Secret Committee of Trade, which handled the procurement of supplies, the Committee of Correspondence, which handled foreign affairs, and the Marine Committee, which oversaw the Continental Navy. After the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, he helped procure arms and ammunition for the revolutionary cause, and in late 1775 he was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. By 1775 he was the richest man in America. In the aftermath of the French and Indian War, Morris joined with other merchants in opposing British tax policies such as the 1765 Stamp Act. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the Superintendent of Finance of the United States, becoming known as the "Financier of the Revolution." Along with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin, he is widely regarded as one of the founders of the financial system of the United States.īorn in Liverpool, Morris migrated to North America in his teens, quickly becoming a partner in a successful shipping firm based in Philadelphia. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania legislature, the Second Continental Congress, and the United States Senate, and he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was an English-born merchant and a Founding Father of the United States.

The thing is, though, that Butler’s Oankali have their own selfish motivations-and also don’t exactly have the readers sympathies. There’s an instructive parallel here with the Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis trilogy, in which creepy tentacled alien things descend from the sky after earth has destroyed itself to heal the humans and show them the path to happiness, great sex, and the acceptance of difference. “How can you be civilized if there is no uncivilized?” She’s reprimanding the Radchaai for their imperial ways…but she could be talking about the structure of the book itself, in which a plentful of foils are presented as less civilized so that Breq can show them the way. “Everything necessitates its opposite,” Breq says. With this kind of panoramic view, Breq and the voice of the novel become almost simultaneous Breq might as well be the author, which means that the book feels like Leckie setting up the other characters as problems to be solved by Breq. ![]() Part of the problem is that, as ship’s captain, Breq has access to instantaneous information from her ship which allows her to function as a semi-omniscient narrator she knows what other characters are doing, and, often even what they are thinking and feeling. She orders repairs to the ghettoes, sparks wage negotiations on the plantations, and forces the recalcitrant citizens to confront their unjust preconceptions every one. With vast political and personal abilities and an infallible sense of morality, Breq swoops in to show the locals the error of their ways. Dispatched as a powerful commander to Atoehk Station in the wake of a chaotic breakdown of the empire, where Breq encounters fairly transparent analogues of earth prejudice, ghettoes, and slave plantations. In the second book, Ancillary Sword, especially, Breq’s unique qualifications and sympathies become a literal social justice deus ex machina. She (most people in the novel default to the pronoun “she”), as a former ship’s ancillary, is incredibly physically adept, ancient and knowledgeable, and, as a former slave-body, uniquely attuned to the trials of the marginalized and oppressed. Breq in fact functions as a kind of superhero. In fact, though, Breq’s personal pain becomes a kind of guarantor of a broader, more thoroughgoing justice. That sorrow never goes away, nor really gets revenged (at least not after the first two volumes) which is why some folks might not immediately see the books as particularly happy. The ship is then dismantled, and one escaped ancillary body, now calling itself Breq, fless across the universe, consumed with sorrow. The central event of the books is when the main character-a spaceship, with connected ancillary human bodies-is forced to kill its captain, the love of its life. Some might be taken aback at the idea that the Ancillary series is cheerful. Leckie has plenty of smarts, and she writes well, but she’s just too…cheerful. I can’t really recommend this as highly as LeGuin/Butler/Russ, though, nor with the enthusiasm I have for more contemporary writers like N.K. tradition of feminist sci-fi, and Leckie does too, so that makes me happy. It’s great fun page turning space opera adventure with twisty plots and thoughtful meditations on justice, identity and gender along the way. I think that's hopeful.I’m currently whipping through Ann Lecki’s Ancillary series. ![]() ![]() But we can tackle this with just a couple of minutes per day. “If it turned out that the changes we want to make required huge allocations of time to activities we're not doing now, then it would be impossible. “We have to switch off fossil-fuel energy and construct more renewables,” says study co-author Eric Galbraith of McGill University. Ultimately the study found that relatively little time-about five minutes per average human day-goes to activities that directly alter the environment and climate change, such as extracting energy and dealing with waste, suggesting an opportunity to put in more time to help the planet. Activities such as agriculture took up much more time in poorer countries than in wealthier ones, whereas others such as human transportation were fairly constant everywhere. Scientists recently compiled the available data about how people around the world allocate their time and used them to define the average “global human day.” More than a third of our hours are spent in bed, they found, with the rest split among three categories the researchers devised based on whether the time directly affected humans, the physical world, or where and what people are doing. Every human on Earth has the same 24 hours to spend in a day-but the way we divide those hours for work and sleep and school and play varies a lot. ![]() WeChat re-signed its agreements with all overseas users, but everything on there except for one-to-one chats have to use WeChat protocols," Liu said. ![]() The main things I'd have liked to see personally are accurate three-point texture filtering (the existing texture smoothing does a decent enough job, but isn't as accurate to the N64 as the technique used in the Doom 64 remaster,) the original models (which, yes, are minimally different from the original and with interpolation disabled and enhanced models turned off are hard to distinguish from the actual Quake 64 models, but still - it's a port after all, why not go the extra mile?) and making the CRT filter a tweakable set of menu options instead of a single (forced on) filter.įor console users especially, having that filter forced on is really not an ideal way to play a port of a classic game that they are expecting to look like it did on the N64. Originally posted by gamerXT3:It`s Quake 64 as far as level design, textures, lighting and sound goes, there`s probably no need to keep the original animation or polygon models, even if that would be like the original version. I just wish they had taken the same approach they did for Doom 64. ![]() Thrilled to have it at all honestly, and I hope they do the same for Quake II 64 eventually. It's definitely adequate, don't get me wrong. Much more care was taken (some minor issues notwithstanding.) Kaiser et al never would have approached Doom 64 that way. It's a somewhat sloppy and inaccurate solution, especially given that it's forced and requires a console command to disable. Again, if that's not the case, I'm a bit (but only a bit) disappointed they didn't approach the port with the same goal of as much accuracy as possible as they did for Doom 64.Īnd the CRT filter, imo, speaks to that. But my understanding was that a somewhat different Nightdive personnel roster overall worked on this than Doom 64's port. I know Machine Games did the new Quake episodes. The port work was done by the same people as Doom 64. No, machinegames just did the new episode. If that's not the case, it's news to me (and I thank you for the correction,) but in that case I'm actually a bit more disappointed that the same approach wasn't taken for the sake of accuracy, since they've demonstrated they can do it well. (Though, to be fair, that's less necessary in this case since Quake 64 didn't have unique levels or assets in the same way Doom 64 did.) Hence this essentially being a mod designed to give a rough approximation of what Quake 64 was, rather than reverse engineering the original code and extracting original assets from the cart. But I have been led to believe that whereas Doom 64 was primarily overseen by the same team (specifically Kaiser et al) who handled Doom 64 EX, this remaster/port was handled by others (including Machine Games for the new episodes) and that this is one reason the same approach wasn't taken with this remaster vs Doom 64. See the lighting topic, for example.) Uh. As this isn't exactly a faithful port of either classic Quake or the N64 version in terms of total accuracy, even with options disabled. Originally posted by Aikido: (Though, if they ever port the unique Quake II campaign from the N64, I hope they'll let the team that ported Doom 64 do it rather than take this approach. ![]() (Though, if they ever port the unique Quake II campaign from the N64, I hope they'll let the team that ported Doom 64 do it rather than take this approach. Now I feel like I can play the modern iteration of Quake 64 I wanted in an official release finally. On PC of course we have this console/debug menu option, but having it integrated into the menu options would be preferable across all platforms IMO. Console owners don't have access to the debug menu, and it's a simple enough flag to make a menu entry for. I'm also just not a fan of forced CRT-like filters for the simple fact that, although increasingly rare, some retro collectors still have CRTs that they play their modern consoles on (believe it or not) and don't need such filters.įor both reasons, making it a menu-accessible option that can be disabled would be great. ![]() While the CRT filter is a nice option to have, truthfully, most decent CRTs back in the day, even at their low SD resolutions, were much crisper and clearer than this filter makes the game look. (Though, the texture smoothing isn't 100% accurate to the three-point texture filtering the actual N64 hardware utilized.) Which is all I wanted. With the CRT filter disabled, antialiasing off, and texture smoothing enabled, the game looks and feels like Quake 64 to me, just widescreen, with new lighting and other bells and whistles, and upscaled. That is unless you deal with super large files on a daily basis and you want to be able to easily move and rename and delete and organize files on your phone like you can on your Mac. I don't believe there will be enough value there to justify the price, and either Android File Transfer ( if it works for your phone), or any WiFi file transfer solution, or even a cheap dual-USB drive will do the job and more. However, if you're happy with Finder or your file browser of choice and you're only looking at purchasing the Commander One PRO pack for its Android MTP support, then I'd advise you to think carefully about it. If you were already in the market for a powerful dual-pane file browser on Mac and Commander One hits the sweet spot for you while also providing compatibility with your Android phone, then it's easy to say that the $29.99 price tag will be worth it for you. Some of this might be due to MTP peculiarities so check these conditions out before you blame either Commander One or AFT.Īside from that, the two main things I didn't like about Commander One were its inability to preview / show thumbnails of files on my phone and the quirky deselection method. Switching my Pixel 2 XL to charging then back to MTP fixed that, and I've found Commander One to be more reliable than AFT but still, I wouldn't say this solves all of AFT's connectivity problems. Second is that your phone might not be properly detected, it's infrequent but it happened once or twice, or it may not show up if you close Commander One and reopen it. ![]() It's a minor inconvenience, but you'll have to launch it manually. First is that try as I might, I don't think Commander One can open automatically when you connect your phone over MTP, unlike Android File Transfer. It's free to try for 15 days, after which you'll need to pay to unlock those added options. ![]() Commander One is a free file browser, but the PRO pack opens up a lot of features including Android and MTP support ( free vs PRO comparison chart). So before I get into what Commander One does and how it works, let's clear out the pricing and versions issue. After giving it a go, I'd say it does what it promises, but I'm still not sure that's worth the entry price unless you need its other abilities or you copy large files super frequently between your phone and computer. So when Eltima reached out and asked us to take a look at Commander One's Android file manager and transfer abilities, I was intrigued though not fully convinced. I use very little third-party software on my Mac beyond Chrome and Photoshop and I find Mac software way overpriced.
